Four people have died, including a gunman, in a shooting and fire at a townhome just outside Baltimore, Maryland, according to the authorities.
Officers and firefighters responded to reports of a shooting and a two-alarm fire on Saturday in Woodlawn, an unincorporated area about 12 miles west of Baltimore.
When the police arrived, they saw an armed man outside of a townhouse, said Joy Stewart, a spokeswoman for the Baltimore County Police Department.
The gunman was killed by police. Two men and one woman also died. Another person had injuries that were not life-threatening.
"Our officers responded to the scene. When they arrived, they found a man outside armed," Stewart told reporters during a news briefing.
"At this time, we can confirm that an adult male suspect is deceased, two adult male victims and one adult female victim are deceased and one adult male victim is suffering from non-life threatening injuries," a statement from the Baltimore County Police Department said.
Later on Saturday, the police said they had located two other people who were originally unaccounted for earlier in the day. Their conditions remain unknown.
The authorities did not provide details about what had set off the shooting. The cause of the fire and relations of those involved are also under investigation, Stewart said.
"Its my understanding that they are related," he added.
Timothy Rostkowski, a fire director with the Baltimore County Fire Department, said the two-alarm fire started in a "townhome and spread to the two adjacent townhomes."
The townhouse where the fire had started "as well as the residence directly to the right ... have collapsed," Rostkowski said. "The third dwelling that was involved has heavy damage."
The county executive, Johnny Olszewski said on Twitter, "This rapidly evolving situation has required a multi-agency response and will take time to fully investigate."
